Historic Northeast

Character-filled streets around North Anthony, Forest Park Boulevard and Lakeside. Explore the homes and green spaces that make each setting its own.

THE FIVE-MINUTE VERSION

Historic Northeast is a useful umbrella, not a single historic district. The city's Historic Northeast 2035 plan covers Forest Park, Northside, and North Anthony neighborhoods. Within this broader guide, North Anthony's historic residential corridor, Forest Park Boulevard, and the Lakeside historic streets should be understood as distinct places with their own buildings, routes, and boundaries.

The homes to look for

For an older house, examine porch structure, masonry, roof flashing, basement moisture, and the documentation for wiring and plumbing changes. Trees and historic windows deserve specific maintenance questions. Establish the individual property's designation before planning exterior work; an umbrella neighborhood label does not determine the review process.

Picture an ordinary Tuesday

Make at least two stops: the North Anthony / East State side for a corridor walk, and Lakeside Park for its pond, rose garden, and walking loop. Lawton Park, closer to downtown on North Clinton, is another separate destination with trails and a skate park. A home near Forest Park Boulevard may give a different route to those outings than one near North Anthony.

Things to consider

These established streets offer varied architecture and nearby destinations, but major corridor crossings, garage access, and house condition change block by block. Choose a specific neighborhood and route before treating the entire northeast core as one option.

Our descriptions are editorial orientation. They do not establish current prices, inventory, commute times, school quality, or safety. Rent/buy and affordability depend on the actual property and your full household budget.

Make your visit count

  • Walk North Anthony separately from Forest Park Boulevard.
  • Visit Lakeside Park and the surrounding streets as their own stop.
  • Trace the actual route to East State destinations or downtown.

Bring the same questions to each area on your shortlist. Compare the routes, costs, and responsibilities you would actually live with, then revisit the places that remain promising.

A couple of useful questions.

Is Historic Northeast one officially designated historic district?

No. The city's Historic Northeast 2035 document is a neighborhood plan for Forest Park, Northside, and North Anthony. The visitor-oriented umbrella includes other familiar historic places, including Lakeside. Individual historic districts and properties have their own boundaries and designations.

Is Lakeside Park the same place as Forest Park Boulevard?

No. Lakeside Park is at 1401 Lake Avenue and includes the pond, rose garden, and recreation facilities. Forest Park Boulevard is a separate residential streetscape in this part of the city. Visit each to understand the home setting and the park route.
